Whether your hair is relaxed or natural, steaming is one of the few things you can do to pamper your hair and keep it healthy. Hair steaming is a deep conditioning treatment that uses steam produced from water that has been put into a steamer. Steaming helps to create a humid environment that is just perfect for your hair as opposed to natural air which may have some drying effect. You can either steam your hair at the salon or by yourself at home (I’ll make a post about that real soon). Today, I’ll be highlighting some of the benefits of hair steaming and why you should consider including it in your hair regimen.
1) OPENS CLOGGED SCALP PORES.
When scalp pores are clogged, hair follicles will not grow. Steaming helps to cleanse and detoxify the scalp. It also opens up the pores to allow for proper penetration of deep treatments to yield better results.
2) INCREASES MOISTURE RETENTION.
Moisture retention cannot be overemphasised when it comes to black hair. Moisture helps to keep your hair soft, supple and less prone to breakage. Moisture retention is also crucial in pulling off great hairstyles such as Bantu knots, twist outs etc.
3) IMPROVES HAIR ELASTICITY.
Steaming helps to strengthen hair by improving its elasticity. What this simply means is that it confers hair the ability to stretch without breaking. It achieves this by providing the necessary moisture needed to keep your hair in a strong and healthy elastic state.
4) NOURISHES HAIR CUTICLE.
This is one of the most important benefit of steaming. The warm vapour opens the cuticle (thin outer layer of the hair) and allows the hair strands to absorb more of the conditioner before rinsing. This does not only add volume to your hair, but leaves it silky smooth and shiny.
5) PROMOTES HAIR GROWTH.
Although some claim that increased blood flow to the scalp as a result of steaming causes the hair to grow, others attribute it to the moisturised atmosphere that steaming provides which is a requirement for healthy hair growth.
6) HELPS CONTROLS DANDRUFF.
Regular steaming treatments help to balance scalp moisture levels and thus control scalp conditions such as dandruff which are caused by dry scalp.
7) ENHANCES NATURAL CURL.
Moisture retained in hair strands as a result of steaming helps to boost and enhance your natural hair curls. It also helps you to obtain and maintain definition giving your hair an overall better look.
